So who the ‘eck am I?

Another frickin Mummy blogger, or at least having a go at it! I’ve thought about doing this for the last 12 years, however there suddenly seemed to be an influx of similarly minded people who actually arsed themselves to get on with it and, to be honest, they pretty much captured my thoughts between them and I didn’t really feel I had much more to be said! I’m not even that sure I do now, but its on my ‘list’, and as a role model to 3 girls, I feel I ought to give it a whirl!

So, to answer the question, in short, I am a woman steadily approaching her 40’s, a wife, a mother and a nurse. In short. Lets all be honest tho, as I’m sure many would agree, thats just the job title really isn’t it? The job description would read more like,

Wanted: Someone who can simultaneously change a nappy, cook a meal, do the school run, squeeze in a shift at work and perform sexual favours, whilst appearing to maintain the illusion of sanity and control and looking like they’ve just stepped out of a commercial for that shampoo that smells like a rainforest. Salary non-negotiable but likely to disappear immediately into an array of bills, clothes (no longer for yourself), extra curricular activities, toys and if you’re savvy, enough alcohol to be able to help you achieve the aforementioned, if not, you’re basically screwed.

Mmm, one wanders if my 20 something year old self might have skipped so gaily into domestic bliss had anyone told her all this… Please don’t misunderstand me, I bloody love my kids and my husband isn’t too shabby either, but what no-one ever tells you, is how hard and all consuming adulting is.

As a new Mum, I attended all the obligatory baby groups and was filled with complete horror at all the expectations that were thrust upon me. The various ‘guide books’, all with totally conflicting opinions and ideas on how to bring up the perfect child and be the perfect mother. And then the totally monotony of the weekly comparisons in milestones, “well my Alfred, not only ate a carrot, but walked over to the potty and actually shat in it while telling me in sign language what the hidden agenda was in last nights episode of ‘In the night garden’ and he’s not even 6months old!’ You know exactly who I mean. Its all so competitive and pressurised and can send even the most intelligent women into spirals of self doubt about something that has been happening for centuries. So I quickly gave up on these groups, ditched the weekly weigh ins and sought solace in my actual friends who had zero interest in what colour Esme’s poo was or what she had to eat yesterday, but liked the occasional cuddle with her and took her shopping for hideously overpriced mini trainers and took me for lunch in a wine bar and not at sodding soft play! Her first birthday party was a BBQ and she was one of very few children there but perfectly happy thankyou very much! And this leads to my reason for doing this blog! I just get so sick of the bullshit! Yes, being a Mummy is truly amazing but can become so much harder than it needs to be if you succumb to all the modern day instructions on how to do it! I just wanted to share some of my experiences, not just as a mother, but a wife and everything else we all juggle, and hopefully make the point that we don’t all have to live by the rule book and in fact life is often a lot easier if we don’t.

I write about lots of things, life, babies, recipes, gin, survival etc etc….. It’s an eclectic mix inside the head of a mother, wife and nurse. Enjoy!
